Beyond The Pale Ghosts In The MachineAarhus, Denmark 2018

Exploring how digital registration technology can be used to capture and translate the intangible and ephemeral aspects of architectural experience, Beyond The Pale Ghosts In The Machine used photogrammetry to record a typical visitor’s path through a school cafeteria. This research expanded upon previously explored themes and digital tools by increasing the size of the space registered, incorporating physical movement and activities, and purposely documenting the area in a non-standard sequence determined by a space-specific typical experience. Resulting processing inevitably produced a broad array of object misregistrations, creating a digital version filled with blurry correlations, undulating cloud fragments, and ghostly mirages of mislocated bodies.

The digital version of the cafeteria was analyzed further through an architectural design lens and specific regions were identified and isolated as potential areas for the design and construction of an architectural intervention. One isolated region was closely examined and used to extract a series of metal folding instructions to be further developed at full scale using sheet metal and a robot. Experiments translating the “folds” within the point cloud region to shaping metal were used to delve deeper into extracting and developing physical effects or phenomena such as distortion, rippling, extremes in depth, visual ooze, and ambiguous boundaries.
Ultimately the driving ambition for this research was to further develop an architectural process that reveals how digital phenomena (as perceived and curated by the architect) can be physically produced, and consequently how these physical artifacts further transform perception and experience of an existing physical space.

Glitching RitualGrafarkirkjaHofsós, Iceland2018
Glitching Ritual is a Master’s thesis research project exploring how digital misregistrations, misprocessings, and misproductions can yield unique and evocative results in the development of an architectural design methodology. The evolution of a design pipeline was provoked by pushing the limitations of photogrammetry, 3D printing, and Grasshopper in coordination with traditional architectural design conventions such as drawing, photography, analytical diagramming, and schematic design methods.

The resulting processing methdology was applied to a 17th century turf church Grafarkirkja in Hofsós, Iceland, which was digitally registered using photogrammetry. The resulting point cloud was then processed using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper to produce a variety of architectural drawings, 3D printed models, analytical sketches and ultimately a series of proposed design drivers for further development.More HERE.

Alexandria Chan experiments with narrative in architecture, objects, the written word, and
everything else in between. A trained architect with degrees from Carleton University and Arkitektskolen Aarhus, she has worked on a heritage residence renovation, a light rail transit station, a park pavilion, and the design and fabrication of custom furniture. As an architectural researcher, she pushes the limitations of ubiquitous industry-standard digital technologies in search of novel experiences, atmospheres, and materiality. In all of her work she draws from her experience in photography, prose, poetry, drawing, and making in pursuit of the mysterious, the ephemeral, and the weird.

Dark HouseAarhus, Denmark2018
Dark House is the last in a series of translations through various media: photography, installation, prose, graphic, diagram, and architecture. These translations each explore related conceptual facets stemming from the analysis of a photograph of a dancer mid-performance. A brief written narrative was composed describing the dancer’s encounter of an unexpected presence through the exploration of an interior space. This then served as the main inspiration for a collage collapsing pivotal moments of the narrative into fragments of the final scene, and ultimately the design of her residence adjacent to Aarhus Central Station.

The manifestations of these translations served as conceptual, material, and spatial inspiration, guiding the architectural translation towards the design of a sequence of spaces that programmatically function as the essential rooms of a house. The building provides spaces for eating, dining, sleeping, washing, and relaxing, that are differentiated by light and furniture. The sequencing and access of these spaces is guided by the changes in spatial perception described in the written narrative. The overall design positions each “room” as a stage, and each program as a scene in a theater performance. Within the larger skeletal framework of the concrete enclosure, floors become suspended platforms elevated to collectively build up to a final climactic meeting.More HERE.

Octopus
Ottawa, Canada
2014

The Octopus chair prototype is inspired by the sea creature’s form mid-propulsion. The chair legs are shaped following the curvature of the octopus’s tentacles as it prepares to push itself forward through the ocean. Its suction cups were used as design cues, becoming both ornamentation and structural reinforcement. An exercise in wirework, steel is used to support and connect the primary wood sitting surfaces.

For The BirdsAnholt Offshore Windfarm, Denmark2016

Wind turbines create various frequencies of sound pollution during operation both above and below water. Amplitude and frequencies vary depending on source: air foil turbulence, mechanical equipment and aerodynamic modulation. Although various studies and international environmental regulations have been set to limit wind farm noise production, they only take into consideration negative effects on humans. To date, there has been relatively little to no targeted research on how acoustic emissions affect the local wildlife.

The research vessel hosts a bioacoustics researcher and ornithologist for a maximum of two days to determine when the wind-farm-generated sound pollution begins to detrimentally affect the population of local birdlife. This short time span allows the researchers to confirm data collected by other electronic equipment. The researchers then determine which turbine(s) will need to be prematurely shut down, modulating the lifespan of the wind farm in concert with DONG Energy’s predetermined wind farm expiry date. The habitat moves between a small number of critical turbines: around the border, the turbine closest to the substation, and a central turbine; in order to aggregate the total acoustic emissions from the wind farm, as well as localize problem sources to specific turbines for selective shut down.

The habitat is designed to have no engine-generated noise and to rely solely on air currents and its position in the wind farm. In order to reduce its size, lightweight composite materials are used and program space has been reduced to two necessary spaces: an observation pod and a rest area/control deck. The habitat functions in tangent with its docking buoy, which houses most of the equipment required to keep the habitat afloat and in position.

This construction of steel and acrylic is designed and built for the Arkitektskolen Aarhus’s contribution to the European Capital of Culture 2017 event, “Architecture Moves”, which is the result of cooperation with international experts and local stakeholders. The exhibition consists of a variety of works designed and constructed by students and distributed throughout Vennelystparken, and is part of Aarhus Festival 2017 and the international architecture festival Rising Architecture Week.
Anholt Forces is the culmination of all of the knowledge accumulated from preceding research projects and focused discussions on personal experiences gained over a three-day visit to Anholt. The materialization of this knowledge expresses the studio’s understanding of the specificities of Anholt’s physical and ephemeral characteristics that give it its particular sense of place. The materials, tools, methods, and conceptual bases established have been selected in order to experiment and explore the transformative capacities of a constantly evolving process to redefine our understanding of material, structure, place, and movement.

Rosetta StoneWith Alexander CarlsenPhotos by Rabea Gonnsen &
Robert B. Trempe Jr. Aarhus, Denmark2016

The Rosetta Stone project is a series of mappings conducted on the west coast of the island of Anholt, Denmark. These mappings included registrations of perception of physical and ephemeral boundaries over a wide range of time periods and areas along the island’s western beach. A selected mapping was used to define a machining method for translation onto a mahogany wood plate. Using a ball-end mill, points of perceived openness and enclosure became drilling targets for the CNC machining process. The position and depth of the drill targets corresponded directly to perceived clarity and proximity of boundary conditions over the area the team explored.

TransfigurationWith Dylan Johnston & Neil YanMontreal, Canada2014

The Grey Nun’s Motherhouse is an artifact of Quebec’s religiously steeped historical and cultural foundations. Its importance in the city of Montreal has declined conversely with the city’s development towards modernity, globalization, liberalism, and secularism.

Concordia University has purchased the Convent to expand its campus by creating the “Quartier Concordia”, an amassing of city blocks located at Montreal’s most populous mixed commercial street. This new campus block will be dedicated to student residences, departments, and lounges. Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts (FOFA) will be the primary occupant of the new campus block and will integrate the Convent’s catacombs, which continues to house the remains of the Grey Nuns.

This project proposes a master plan in which the modes of creativity, their products, and common perceptions of “art”, are freed, funneled, redefined, directed, and then presented into the public domain. It also presents a method of maintaining the relevancy of the Convent’s historical and spiritual significance amongst the education, production, and valuation of art.

One Day House With Martin DetoeufCansone Prime PosteVenetian Lagoon, Italy2013

One of the many abandoned isles of the Venetian Lagoon, Cansone Prime Poste is a brick ruin, with four walls and no roof. The island barely extends past the ruin’s boundaries and is completely inundated beneath 90 cm of water in winter when the tides are at their highest. The house is intended for the temporary visitor, the traveler who comes by boat at dawn and leaves by dusk. The house is an assortment of blatant suggestions.

Space is created above, below and within concrete rooms. No two rooms are identical. Each space has its own defining elements: a rug, a telescope, a boat, a café table and two chairs, a pool, a toilet, two bookshelves, four cots, a wood burning stove, a bean bag chair, a barbecue, a dining table and five stools, a bathtub, a hammock, one square opening, no roof, one rectangular opening. They do not touch the walls of the ruin and each room is different in its elevation. The only common floor is that of the ruin itself.

The arrangement of solidity in emptiness negotiates the relationships between the existing ruin, the sea, the isle, the lagoon, and the individual’s presence.
